Black History Month: Byron K Armstrong

Black History is American History is Local History is Westfield History. We observe Black History Month in February, but really as it is American history we do all year around. Westfield was in part founded because Quakers left the south to get away from the Enslavement Economy. It is ingrained in Westfield to be Anti-Slavery. We even have a cemetery named after it in Anti-Slavery Friends Cemetery.

We have mentioned the Armstrong family frequently on our page and this time we will talk about a cousin of the five Armstrong brothers that went to World War I - Byron Kenneth Armstrong.

He was the cofounder of the Kappa Alpha Nu (later Psi) fraternity and was there when his cousin Irvin Armstrong (one of the five) was initiated as the first member.

And, to tie it in with Westfield Washington Wednesday too, here an amazing postcard from our collection. Here Herschel B. Stalker writes to Miss Gladys Barker in Eagletown and mentions that on this picture postcard of Westfield, of a view she should recall (but I have a hard time pinning down), is Byron Armstrong, right of the telephone pole!
